Sura 16 Aya 90

Verily, God commands justice and the doing of good, and generosity towards people near you and He forbids what is shameful and what is counter to reason, as well as envy; and He urges you repeatedly so that you might keep this in mind.

Here is an important series of doÂ’s and donÂ’ts in this famous aya; it is commonly recited at the conclusion of the Friday sermon.

To convince yourself that this aya is a method of self empowerment you can compare two families you personally know of. Families in which people make an effort to be fair towards each other, are generous in helping each other, and take the initiative in doing good, such a family will be happy and prosperous. By contrast if you have a family in which people act unfairly towards each other, they are unable to evaluate each others actions in a generous way, where there is jealousy between the parents or among the siblings, the life of such a family is chaotic and dysfunctional.

If you think about these traits only superficially, you can say that they are all very good and you then move on with your familiar patterns of life. How we can learn to change our behavior such that better values are manifested in our lives will be discussed in our meeting.
